Minimum Qualifications:
Be at least 21 years of age.
Hold a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree (preferred) in education or related field with an emphasis in early childhood development.
24 units of Early Childhood Education, 6 units of Administration, and 2 units of Adult Supervision coursework.
Preferred the director is eligible for a call through the LCMS.
Must have at least 1 year of experience (preferred 2 years) as either an assistant director or director.
Competent in computer and school management software.
Christian by confession of faith and example, serving as a role model both in and out of school to the children and as an example to parents, staff, teachers, members of the congregation and to the community-at-large in judgment, respect, and Christian living.
Active member of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation (preferred – mandatory to receive a Call).
Willingness to share God-given talents with the school, church, and community.
Able to relate to children and accept each as a unique child of God.
Able to communicate effectively with both children and adults.
Willing to share in all duties of preschool work.
Able to develop and maintain a schedule.
Capable of handling financial responsibilities.
DIRECTOR’S JOB DESCRIPTION
Role & Function: The School Director is responsible as a teammate for carrying out the Vision and Mission of FLC/COL: “Connecting Hearts, Discovering Purpose in Christ,” instilling our established values within our school culture, and living out our School’s Educational Philosophy. The School Director does this by being the primary leader of FLC/COL’s Shared Ministry, the Preschool, and by carrying out the day-to-day administration of the Preschool. The School Director is responsible for carrying out school policies which are established by the governing body (School Board, Council, and Voter’s Assembly). Further, the School Director is responsible to work with the Pastor, School Board, and governing body in assessing present policies and handbooks, adapting where necessary, and establishing new policies for the future. Lastly, the School Director is responsible for the oversight and development of the classroom environment and for the oversight and professional development of preschool staff and teachers.
Oversight/Supervision: The School Director directly reports to and is directly overseen by the Pastor. Director Evaluation and Continued Education: The School Director evaluation shall be conducted at the end of the 3-month probationary period and an annual review shall occur in August/September. The School Director shall consistently engage in continued education for professional development.
Duties:
A. Spiritual Leader:
i. Work with Pastor to provide opportunities for spiritual growth of staff.
ii. Set an example of Christian leadership and shape the Christian environment.
iii. Assist in empowering congregants to be involved in the school ministry, in either our extracurricular Connection Events (i.e. Trunk-or Treat/Oktoberfest, Christmas Market, Trike -a-thon, Family Fun Night), within the school day on Connection Days, within our Adopt-a Family ministry, or in any other creative manner within the mission of the school.
iv. Provide referrals for Christian counseling for staff and preschool families.
B. Core Responsibilities:
1. Serve as liaison between congregation and preschool program
2. Participate in weekly office staff meetings, contributing to office alignment and organization.
3. Maintain communication and relationships with parents
i. Develop systematic and effective parent-school communication (i.e. Director’s Newsletter, school management software, etc.).
ii. Familiarize parents with school policies & procedures.
iii. Show support for the role of parents as primary caregivers and authorities and assist them with those responsibilities.
iv. Inform parents of progress and special needs of children.
v. Develop and review/update parent handbook as needed.
4. Enhance community relationships
i. Welcome visitors; plan useful and pleasant experiences.
ii. Assist in involving school families in ministry service projects for the community.
iii. Develop relationships with key community stakeholders who can aid in the promotion and development of our school (i.e. South Bay community educational leaders, real estate agents, etc.)
iv. Attend professional educational events & South Bay community events.
5. Maintain Licensing Compliance
i. Ensure full compliance of Licensing requirements is met.
ii. Communicate any issues or information in compliance with Licensing regulations.
6. Lead & Monitor the Accreditation Process
i. Ensure the annual goals of Accreditation are reviewed and achieved/showed progress.
ii. Ensure the Accreditation documents are completed and submitted by the deadlines.
7. Monitor Enrollment & Lead Recruitment
i. Plan and implement procedures to keep accurate student records, track enrollment, and assist in future plans for the sustainability of the school program.
ii. Promote and market COL in the community, digitally and physically at key community events, such as farmer’s markets, education expos, etc.
iii. Give tours and communicate with parents of prospective children.
iv. Provide enrollment materials that reflect the program’s philosophy and goals.
v. Create and maintain up-to-date and effective publicity materials, such as brochures, pamphlets, promotional videos, etc.
vi. Conduct an orientation program for new families.
8. Mentor, Supervise, and Manage School Staff and Teachers; Keep Daily Student Attendance
i. Be a teacher to the teachers, mentoring and investing in their professional development.
ii. Regularly visit classrooms for purposes of mentoring, and evaluation of teaching, curriculum efficacy and classroom environment.
iii. Develop, plan, conduct and/or participate in activities leading to spiritual and professional growth for staff (staff devotions, in-service training, conferences, continuing education, and membership in professional organizations), both collectively and individually.
iv. Annually review staff performance; set goals for professional and spiritual growth with staff and teachers; conduct regular performance check-ins with all school staff and teachers.
v. Update job descriptions, for teachers and staff as required, in accordance with set policies and plans.
vi. Recruit and hire staff within the boundaries of set policies, plan and budget.
vii. Lead regularly scheduled preschool staff meetings.
viii. Arrange for substitute help as needed.
ix. Supervise the implementation of curriculum by all teachers that aligns with the Lutheran Confession of Faith and our Educational Philosophy.
x. Help staff prepare program plans.
xi. Oversee and run our school management software, ensuring day-to-day teacher assignments, compliant teacher-student ratios, opening and closing shifts, etc.
xii. Work with the Business Manager to track and maintain personnel records while guarding confidentiality.
i. Supervise the cleanliness of the classrooms and outside areas.
9. Direct Administration & Partner in Human Resources
i. Contact state & local regulatory agencies; conform to, if not exceed all regulations.
ii. Serve as first responder in any necessary conflict-resolution between school staff and teachers, in accordance with Matthew 18 and Staff Handbook, working with Business Manager to ensure proper process, procedure, and documentation.
iii. Define and adjudicate policies of admission, attendance, payment fees and educational goals as set by the governing body.
iv. Periodically evaluate own work as director by reporting to the Pastor, and in conjunction with the Pastor, to the governing body.
v. Keep informed of current early childhood education issues and research.
vi. Working with the Pastor, prepare monthly reports to update the School Board and FLC Council on school events and metrics.
vii. Schedule use of shared space and equipment.
viii. Work with Business Manager to ensure employees’ medical requirements are compliant to state and federal requirements.
ix. Approve timesheets of school staff and teachers, approve vacation requests, other personal requests and sick days. Work with Business Manager to ensure Employment and Payroll compliance both to the state and federal government, and to our internal set Staff Handbook policies.
x. Collaborate with the Business Manager to ensure bi-weekly payroll is completed.
10. Maintain proper conditions for health and safety
i. Work with the Business Manager to keep health history and immunization records for children and staff.
ii. Contact agencies and maintain a referral system to help children who have special needs.
iii. Ensure the safe operation of the preschool through proper maintenance and upkeep in collaboration with FLC Board of Trustees.
11. Demonstrate Fiscal Responsibility:
i. Assist in the preparation of FLC’s/COL’s annual budget and in regular, monthly reporting.
ii. Operate within the school program budget, not to exceed the annual budgeted amount, without first obtaining governing approval.
iii. Supervise purchasing of school specific equipment and materials.
iv. Help ensure the collection of fees and tuition.
v. Assist Board and Council, when requested, in exploring the availability of State and Federal grant money and other donations, while completing appropriate applications, to assist in the ongoing financial viability of our School.
vi. Assist in identifying the need for student scholarship/tuition assistance.
SALARY RANGE: $65,000-$90,000 depending on experience and qualifications
